Initial deployment will be in sun-synchronous polar orbit shielded by Earth’s magnetic field. Subsequent deployments with expandable radiation shield enclosures in cislunar space will follow, seeding the growth of materials and fabrication industries to support the systematic deployment of new premium orbital real estate. With suitably configured mirrors, the system may be deployed around other celestial bodies and as an orbiting cycler between Earth and Mars.
The concept won NIAC Phase I (2013) and Phase II (2016) grant funding. All material shown here dates from after the end of NIAC Phase II funding (one image appears in the Phase II report filed in 2020). A provisional patent was filed March 2023 and further funding is anticipated.
